Joan passed away Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Brian’s House, age 88. She was born May 6, 1929 in Plymouth, Michigan to the late Edward M. and Hedwig “Hattie” (Szutkowski) Plachta. Joan married Robert E. Gast in Holy Trinity Catholic Church on November 12, 1949 and Robert predeceased her on March 25, 1986. She was faithful and devoted member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish-St. Hyacinth Church. She enjoyed playing cards with family, friends and neighbors; who knew her more as the “neighborhood mom or grandma.” Joan was an avid Detroit Piston and Tigers fan no matter their records. She will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her kind heart.
Surviving are three children: Patrick (Patricia) Gast, Michael (Laura) Gast and Sandra Jo Gast, daughter in-law Becky Matthews, five grandchildren: Brian (Chrissy) Gast, Molly Jo (Rich) Gast-Mielens, Alex (Jenny) Gast, Max Gast and Andy (Jill) Ohlman, eight great grandchildren: Kendrick, Moira, Sophia and Isaac Gast, Madison and Cooper Ohlman, Cameron and Aleah Gast, five sisters: Geraldine Sawyer Foley, Alice Plachta, Patricia (Marvin) Wyant, Angela Spencer and Judy (Bill) Finn, several nieces, nephews and special friends. Joan was predeceased by her son Dennis E. Gast, grandson Jay Ohlman, three brothers and three sisters: Edward Jr., Gerald, Eugene, Katie and Barbara Plachta and Dolly (Willard) Hipke, sister in-law Lois (Willie) Jacobs and a brother in-law Cline Spencer.
The Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 26, 2018 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish-St. Hyacinth Church, 1515 Cass Ave., Bay City, MI 48708. Fr. Rick Filary will celebrate Mass. Friends may call at the church only on Monday from 9:00 am until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorials to Brian’s House or Multiple Sclerosis Society. www.ambrosefuneralchapel.com
