James R. Szczepanski, our loveable, generous, compassionate, thoughtful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother passed away Saturday, June 1, 2019 at McLaren Bay Region, age 81. He was born in Bay City, Michigan on October 25, 1937 to the late Stanley and Victoria (Leppek) Szczepanski and resided there most of his life. James served his country in the United States Army before marrying Grace Kukla on March 3, 1962 and worked for GM Buick Flint for 39 years before retiring in 2002. He was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish – St. Hyacinth Church and the former St. Hyacinth Athletic Club. James loved to fish for Walleye and Perch on the Saginaw Bay and was a University of Michigan Football fan. Above all, James loved his family and it was his deep love for them that created the formidable bond they share today. He was an unselfish and forgiving man with strong family values who included everyone and excluded no one.
James is survived by his wife Grace and their children: Eileen (Ronald) Irlwek, Steven (Cathy) Szczepanski , Janet (Tom) Kersten, Mary (Glen) Tacey, Denny (Colleen) Szczepanski, Gail (Dennis) Sarnowski, and Greg (Cristina) Szczepanski; grandchildren: Keith, Adam, Nicole, and Calista Duff, Justin (fiancé, Melanie) Szczepanski, Kayla (Drew) Vogl, Tommy (fiancé, Kirsten) Kersten, Megan (Chris) Kunze, Jessica (Travis) Delph, Natalie and Aiden Kersten, Nicholas (fiancé, Selene), Danielle, Craig, Marlo, and Miranda Tacey, Katie, Rachel, Emily, Zack, and Zoey Szczepanski, Alyssa, Amber and Bryce Sarnowski, Sofia, Jakob, and Vivian Szczepanski; great-granchildren: Maddi and Aurora Kersten, Addison Delph, Isabelle Kunze, and Vincent Vogl; a brother, Gerald (Carol) Szczepanski and sister in law, Anne Szczepanski. Besides his parents, James was also preceded in death by his brother Edward and his sister Betty Kearns.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish – St. Hyacinth Church 1515 Cass Ave., Bay City, MI 48708. Fr. Rick Filary will preside with Military Honors under the auspices of the Bay County Veterans Honor Guard and interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends may call at Ambrose Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at church on Wednesday after 9:00 a.m. Members of Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish will pray the Rosary Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. followed later that evening by a Parish Vigil Service for James at 7:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the “Wishes of the Family.”
