Gene M. Woods

June 28, 1987 ~ June 22, 2019 (age 31)

Woods, Gene Mitchell

Bay City, Michigan

Our beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend left us to soon; in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 22, 2019, age 31 years. Gene was born on June 28, 1987, in Bay City, MI, to his loving parents Mitchell G. and Kathy M. (Barber) Woods. Gene was a graduate of the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA), where he completed his education in a timely manner, at quite a young age. His education in the culinary arts provided him the skills to work at numerous businesses around Bay City. Special thanks to those who mentored Gene along the way. Gene was an artist; he enjoyed painting, reading, writing, and poetry. He was always trying to further educate himself. Some of his biggest joys in life were turtles, pets, nature and the environment surrounding him. He enjoyed spending lots of time on the beach at Bay City State Park, in the north woods, and around Tobico marsh. Overall he was definitely a woodsy kind of guy. Gene had many joys and passions in life, but nothing compared to the time he was able to spend with his family and friends. He will be missed greatly by many, and always remembered as one of “the best huggers” in the world.

Son of Mitchell G. and Kathy M. (Barber) Woods, Grandson of Gerald “Jerry” and Norene Woods, Lyle and Valerie Barber. Brother to Krista and Derrick Backstrom, Laura Schmidt and fiancé Jim Greenleaf. Uncle to Derian and Deikon Backstrom, Caleb Blehm and Ava and Ally Greenleaf. Nephew of Matt (Gina) Woods, Marty (Tara) Woods, Mike (Chris) Wood, and his special “Auntie” Marci Woods. Cousin to, Jordan (Marleen) Phillips, Austin and Mattisyn Woods, Logan and Riley Woods, Alex Woods, and Aliesha (Brendan) Alvarado, Sam (Shyanne) Woods and Aria Woods, Tim (Katie) Barber and Nicole Barber; and Gene’s loving “dragonfly” Tiffaney Loll. After a period of separation, Gene is once again reunited with his grandparents; Grandpa Woods, Lyle and Valerie Barber, and so very special to Gene, Uncle Terry and Aunt Ginny Barber.

At the request of Gene and his family, cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of life, with family and friends, on Sunday June 30th at the Bay City State Park. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the “wishes of the family”. For online condolence please visit
