Donald J. Krzysiak “Big Don”
Bay City, Michigan
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and most of all friend to everyone he met, passed away peacefully Friday, December 7, 2018 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, age 74. Don was born February 7, 1944 in Beaver Township to the late Frank and Lucy (Golombeski) Krzysiak. He married Lois Liford on June 2, 1973 and she survives him. He was a cook in the US Army during his reserve time and then started working at Vescios as a meat cutter. Don later opened Krzysiak’s Family Meats in 1973 on Michigan Avenue and bought Big Dan’s Bar in 1979. He eventually turned it into Krzysiak’s House Restaurant as it is famously known today. In the mid- 1980s, Don expanded his catering business to homes, businesses, churches, weddings and his favorite polka dances. Don was all about adventure. He loved to load up his buddies in the van for a casino trip to Detroit or fly his plane to Mackinaw Island for some well-deserved “RR’. Don loved life. He loved spending time with his family, especially driving the roads with his wife Lois, out-door activities with his children and listening to great polka music. Don always enjoyed his morning coffee table guys and the lottery club. He was a member of the Eagles Aeries #1010, Knights of Columbus Council #4102, the Moose Lodge, and Valley Aero Club. He was always ready to help the Salvation Army, especially on Paczki Day. As a pillar in the community, “Big Don” will be missed dearly by everyone.
Surviving is his loving wife Lois, three children: Tom (Michelle) Krzysiak, Donnie (Jill) Krzysiak and Melanie Krzysiak-Marongiu, five grandchildren: Tommy, Tylor, Kylie, Megan and DJ, one great grandchild, Leland, one brother Jim (Anne) Krzysiak, two sisters Eleanor Horner and Mary Ann Canfield, many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and Jeanne Preston, a special niece who has worked with Don for several years. Don was predeceased by a sister Rose Wiedyk, one brother Willie Krzysiak and a brother-in-law Jim Horner.
