Constance A. Smith, aged 78, passed away peacefully the morning of Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Carriage House in Bay City. She was born on March 6, 1941 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Louis and Theresa (Johnroe) Grills. Constance was a graduate of the former St. John’s High School in Essexville, Michigan, Class of 1959 and received her Bachelors of Arts Degree in Education from Missouri Central State.
In her youth, Constance was sent by the Catholic Church as an Extension Lay Volunteer to work as a Missionary Teacher’s Assistant and Religious Education Teacher in the Ozark Mountains. She retired with over 20 years of service as an Educational Liaison between Swan Valley Schools and Holy Cross Services – Saint Vincent Home in Saginaw, Michigan. Constance collected stamps, liked to read, and enjoyed going to the movies.
Constance is survived by her brother, Terry (MaryDiane T.) Grills; nieces, Ann Cavanaugh, Tricia Cavanaugh, Amy Cavanaugh; nephews, Terry Patrick Grills II, Jim Grills, Mike Grills, Jim Grills; and life-long friend, Patricia Murry. Besides her parents, Constance was preceded in death by her brothers, Ray and Richard Grills; her sister, Joyce Cavanaugh; and nieces, Cathy and Mary Cavanaugh.
Per Constance’s request, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated for her at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Corpus Christi Parish – Holy Trinity Church. Rev. Fr. Robert Kelm will preside. Visitation will be at the church only from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Inurnment will take place in St. Patrick Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
